Tragedy in Norway

At least 76 people are confirmed dead after a right-wing extremist carried out terrorist attacks in Oslo and Utøya in Norway. Anders Behring Breivik has admitted responsibility for a bombing in the country’s capital and for the shooting deaths of over 60 young socialists who were attending the Norwegian Labour Party’s summer youth camp on a secluded island less than an hour from Oslo. Speaking through his lawyer, Breivik said the acts were "gruesome but necessary". Breivik claims he acted in concert with two other groups and police are investigating the possibility of a wider far-right terrorist network.
Breivik’s writings expose a hatred of “Muslims and Marxists”, fascist beliefs and a fear of the "Islamification of Europe”. Reports have found that Breivik has ties to far-right and anti-Islam groups in Europe such as the English Defense League.
Norwegian police had noted an "increase in the activity of far-right extremist circles in 2010".
