Protests in Tel Aviv

5969131017_dcbaa65701_b.jpgOn Sunday night, July 24th, Tel Aviv witnessed circa 30,000 protesters whose initial anger stemmed from rising housing costs but has now advanced to issues surrounding social justice, women’s rights, union rights and education reform.

President Netanyahu’s response to these protests has incited further animosity amongst demonstrators. Netanyahu’s government snubbed the rallies as representing a large leftwing “ Zionist” movement being backed by organizations similar to the New Israel Fund. However, such retorts from Netanyahu’s government have only served to further fuel the flame that has been ignited in the thick of what may turn into yet another revolution. If Israel’s progressive left remains active they will begin to resemble their neighbours who are fighting for similar rights and also share contempt for the current system of government.

Absent amidst the cry of protesters has been the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as demands for more democracy, ensuing anti-democratic laws recently passed.

In the streets of Tel Aviv plainsongs of revolution filled the air. While chanting slogans such as "Mubarak. Assad. Netanyahu", Israel’s progressive left has been stirred and will no doubt be a forced to be reckoned with in the up-coming battle for social justice and democracy in Israel.
